In
JENIN, highly respected UN envoy, Norway's Terje Roed-Larsen emerged from the destruction to describe for the BBC what he'd witnessed:

"Shocking and horrifying beyond belief  ...a blot on the history of the State of Israel ... the most sad and terrible thing I have ever seen ... the stench of decaying corpses is all over the place ... even to hunt down the most criminal elements no civilized nation can allow itself to use such means .."

Israel has since barred Mr Roed-Larsen from taking part in the upcoming UN fact-finding mission to Jenin; he has been denounced by a member of  Sharon's government as "a racist, an anti-Semite and an apparent criminal"

"The president praised Prime Minister Ariel Sharon as "a man of peace.  I'm confident he wants Israel to be able to exist at peace with its neighbor." Bush said he was satisfied that Sharon was acting in good faith. "He gave me a timetable, and he met the timetable"

"Mr. Arafat did condemn terrorism, and now we will hold him to account and demand that he take action against terrorists," Bush said.
