BURTON IN HIS SIXTIES
Here's how a plain photograph falls so short in expressing the character of a person. The 1885  Vanity Fair cartoon conveys so well the mischievous, boyish and almost sheepish humour we associate with Burton - see the naughty twinkle in his eye? I bet he's at somebody's party here and is about to deliver some shocking revelation! The photograph (1890) tells us really nothing about the man - he could be a distinguished politician or scientist; a confirmed member of the establishment! I'd say the cartoon is very sympathetic; done by a person who relished Burton's style.
